New Windscreen required - Good result so far
« on: March 08, 2018, 06:01:10 pm »
:happy2: Managed to land a rock to the windscreen this afternoon.
Phoned insurance and mentioned using an original VW replacement.
She said there's a possibility if it's approved, if not I'll have to pay the extra, which I thought strange.
Firstly, is there any real difference between the 2, or is it likely to have been made in the same factory anyway?
Secondly, has anyone held out and got an original screen fitted.

Luckily, (apart from the excess) the windscreen was about knackered anyway, lots of tiny chips that made it uncomfortable at night or in bright sunlight, and little wiper mark. So will be nice to have a new one.

Anything to watch out for after new one is fitted?

I insisted on VW because I wanted the little blue emblem in the corner. Tell them you want like for like and excess is already stated in the policy. I had to wait a week for them to lose 1st screen and replace it but all good in the end
Only thing you can watch out for is water

Make sure they replace gel pack in auto lights an confirm that both headlights and wipers are working correctl. ideally they should replace whole unit, but they won't unless it's completely goosed.

Get genuine.  I've had 2 aftermarket screens over 3 years and they are crap.  And both times the gel pack was buggered up by the fitter, putting it back with tons of bubbles and wrinkles.

Aftermarket screens are thin pieces of crap.  They are cheaper than OEM for a reason, right?  My second screen got cracked badly from a road resurfacing chip at 40mph, the day after it was fitted.  Awesome strength, not!  Can't be arsed to go through the rigamarole again, so waiting for the mother of all cracks to form, and then I'll be getting a dealer to fit a screen for me.  They replace the gel pack, Autoglass don't.

When I enquired about getting mine done, I asked autoglass if I could have an OEM VW one, if I went ahead, and they said yes, just takes a bit longer to get. You just got to say the chip / crack is bigger than 25 mm. Don't know if they check?? Didn't sound like it...
I didn't bother in the end, for the reasons some have mentioned, plus didn't fancy the way they have to cut the old one out, glue it back in - all sounded like a recipe for a creaky dashboard, but I am a bit OCD about creaks and rattles - ha ha, so I put up with the chip, as  it's very low down

Thanks for all the comments. I'm still pushing for OEM.
Finally spoke to windscreen place yesterday, after being told someone would ring last Friday, then Monday after I'd phone insurance on Sunday to ask why nobody had rung  :rolleye:
I had to ring them again and was given their number by someone from another glass company!

Anyway, all was going well, he even tried to book Saturday morning, until I mentioned having an original windscreen fitted. Seems insurance company have to authorise it, which I already knew.
Received email this afternoon requesting photos of car and windscreen to prove it's a genuine that's in there.
We'll see what happens.
I also think it's starting to spread, it's about 8" big spidery cracks  :signLOL:

Oh and apparently the delay is due to the snow....

But if you currently have an aftermarket one in, it scuppers that process!

I know £600 is a lot, but in all honesty, I'd pay it if the car is a keeper, or keep fighting the glass company for OEM.  Another thing my aftermarket ones have been bad for is grit on the wiper blades scratching in sweep patterns. Niiiiice

Good news!
Had a message back after sending the photos in, they've authorised the OEM windscreen.( it's the original screen in there so no worries there)
Just have to wait for the fitters to get in touch regarding fitting, which I'm not expecting for a while as it'll probably need ordering in.
I now need to make sure they replace the gel pad

Will report back on that  :signLOL:

Don't let the fitter leave until you are happy with the gel pad fitment.
